Resilient agrifood systems must be founded on agroecology and farmers’ rights, declares SEARICE at APRC37 pre-conference

SEARICE executive director, Normita Ignacio, makes a presentation at the national workshop held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in preparation for the 37th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia-Pacific

SEARICE headlined a national workshop held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 15-16 February, on the theme, “Building on a Nexus Between Agroecology, Food Systems and Implementation of Farmers’ Rights." Held in preparation for the 37th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC 37), the workshop sought ways to reinforce the nexus of agroecology with food systems and farmers’ rights.

SEARICE, through its executive director, Normita Ignacio, submitted a position paper to the CSO consultation as its input to APRC37.

The national workshop was organized by the Movement for Land and Agricultural Reform (MONLAR) in cooperation with SEARICE. The workshop tackled: (1) trends and issues affecting global food systems; (2) policies, laws and programs in Sri Lanka that are relevant to food and agriculture; (3) agroecology, food systems and key international agreements. Participants consisted of farmer leaders, agriculture department officials, agriculture scientists and professors, civil society and people’s organization representatives, and youth leaders, among others.
